More than a backup plan

Coming from Bhopal, my journey to this prestigious central university in Delhi has been nothing short of transformative. Initially, my plan was different—I had aspired to clear NEET, but when that didn’t happen, I started looking for other options. That’s when I discovered the BSc Life Sciences program at a prestigious university. The factors that attracted me were quite simple yet significant: the brand value of this university, its academic reputation, the exposure it offered, and the vibrant fest culture. Additionally, being a government university, it provided quality education at an affordable cost. Another reason for my choice was the fact that I had a cousin who had graduated from this university, and hearing about their experiences made the decision easier.

Before joining, I didn’t have unrealistic expectations—I just wanted a decent education and a space to lay the foundation for my future. What I hadn’t anticipated was how much this city and university would shape me beyond academics. Living away from home for the first time, I learned the beauty of finding joy in the little things—as simple as my PG returning the curtains after washing them so the room wouldn’t heat up in the summer, or the excitement of discovering that instead of the usual "mixed veg," the cook had made pizza on a Monday. These small moments became my sources of comfort and happiness, making an unfamiliar city feel a little more like home.

However, the transition was far from easy. Living alone came with its own set of challenges. There were days when I felt overwhelmed—days when I missed home, when the weight of responsibilities felt too much, when I questioned if I had made the right decision. But every time I felt like giving up, I found ways to cope—listening to music, talking to a friend, or watching a movie just to escape for a little while. Slowly, I started finding strength in my independence, realizing that every challenge I faced was shaping me into a stronger, more resilient person.

This university hasn’t just been about academics; it has been a lesson in life. It has taught me gratitude—to appreciate what I have rather than what I don’t. It has taught me adaptability—that no matter where life places you, you have to learn to adjust and grow. More than anything, it has taught me maturity—I am no longer the person who stepped into this city unsure and hesitant. I am someone who has learned to navigate life on my own terms, someone who understands that hardships are just stepping stones to something greater.

Today, when I look back, I see how much I have evolved—from a person who was just looking for a backup option to someone who has truly started building a future. This campus, this city, and this journey have shaped me in ways I never expected, and for that, I will always be grateful.
